How Does Crime Stoppers
Work?
Crime Stoppers is a telephone hotline 1800 333
000 (7 days a week), for information about any criminal activity.
A specially trained team of Police Officers
staffs the office and telephones.
A caller need not give their name and is known
only by a unique code number. This enables the caller to overcome
their fear of involvement or retaliation by remaining anonymous at
all times. This is of paramount importance to the success of the
program.
Calls are not recorded or traced and your
telephone number is not visible.
The office is staffed between 7.00am and
11.00pm weekdays and 8am to 8pm on weekends.
Callers come from all walks of life and have a
variety of reasons for calling, including good citizenship.
If an arrest follows, a reward of up to $1,000
may be paid.
Rewards may be payable for any information
which helps solve any crime, not just crimes featured in the media.
The reward moneys are paid from a fund
controlled and administered by the Crime Stoppers Board.
The Board, on a "points rated" scale,
determines the size of the reward.
The money for the fund comes from
contributions from the community, including businesses.
Crime Stoppers is a true team effort and team
members include the community, the Police Service and the media
working together with one goal, to fight crime in Western Australia.
Crime Stoppers has become internationally
accepted, with programs operating in the USA, England, France,
Germany, Canada and Australia. There are now more than 1,106 Crime
Stoppers' Units worldwide. The original concept began as an idea of
a Police Officer in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1976.
Crime Stoppers operates in all Australian
States and Territories.
The Western Australian Crime Stoppers Program
commenced operation in February 1995 and has already proven to be a
resounding success. In short, Crime Stoppers is a program that is
designed to fight the increasing problem of crime in our community.
The benefits for all concerned are wide-ranging and it is the
community that will ultimately reap the rewards.
